CBD (cannabidiol) is just one of many cannabinoids found in both hemp and cannabis plants. These cannabinoids are all present at varying levels within these plants. They interact with us through our endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate both our bodies and minds.
WHERE DOES CBD COME FROM?
Most CBD in the United States is produced from federally legal hemp. This hemp grows throughout the country and is legal under federal law as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC.
Farmers have spent years perfecting hemp strains that produce large quantities of CBD with only trace amounts of THC, allowing them to get maximum bang for their buck during harvest time.
WHAT DOES CBD DO?
CBD is marketed as having a variety of health benefits. Some of these are supported by solid evidence; others are based on a handful of trials and anecdotal reports. The good news is that CBD seems to have a lot of positive effects on the body and mind, the bad news is that few of these have been approved by the FDA and we’re still learning new things about the compound.
The FDA hasn’t completely dismissed CBD, though. In fact, EPIDIOLEX® is a pure CBD product that was approved to treat seizures associated with several conditions.
If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of CBD, here are a few studies that are worth reading:
- Treatment using CBD can help to reduce pain, anxiety, and the symptoms of depression (source)
- Just 6 weeks of daily CBD use is enough to improve sleep quality and immune function (source)
- CBD has an anti-depressant-like effect in rodent subjects (source)
- It could provide relief to patients with post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD) (source)
- It may help with cravings and other symptoms associated with drug addiction and withdrawals (source)
DOES CBD GET YOU HIGH?
Some argue that CBD is psychoactive because they feel different when they take it. But that’s not quite the same as THC and other recreational drugs. After all, if the bar was that low, we’d be labeling chamomile tea and even a warm glass of milk as psychoactive. It’s true that some users report feeling calm, less stressed, and more relaxed after taking CBD, but their minds have not been altered, and their perceptions are the same.
As for those who claim that it gets them a little high, this probably has more to do with the placebo effect.
Of course, everyone reacts differently. Some people don’t feel anything at all. It all depends on the dose, the quality of the product, and your brain and body chemistry. But just because you don’t feel any immediate and notable effects doesn’t mean it’s not working for you.
IS CBD SAFE?
CBD is considered to be very safe, even in large doses. You should still start slowly, though, just in case, and you should also consult with your care provider first if you are taking any medication or have a preexisting health condition. Although the risk is low and contraindications are few, it’s always worth getting a second opinion and making sure you keep your doctor in the loop.
CBD is rarely taken in isolation, and CBD products usually contain other ingredients, including carrier oils, sweeteners, bulking agents, colorings, and supporting herbal remedies. So, always check the label and look out for anything that you might be allergic to.
Product purity is also important because while there’s little risk of any serious reactions from the CBD, the same can’t be said for any adulterants that make it into the final product.
Always buy from a reputable provider that uses a pure and independently tested product, as is the case with all of the mints that you can buy from Mr. Moxey's.
BROAD SPECTRUM VS. FULL SPECTRUM VS. ISOLATE
Get what you need, nothing else.
You will see three types of CBD products out in the world; broad spectrum, full spectrum, and isolate.
Broad-spectrum CBD is what we use at Mr. Moxey's because it has many of the cannabinoids that contribute to the entourage effect, but our partner farm has removed the THC. This helps ensure a measure of safety with our products, which we know so many people are looking for.
Full-spectrum CBD includes all the cannabinoids that help achieve the entourage effect, but it can still include trace elements of THC.
It’s not enough to get high, and you shouldn’t even feel the effects, but it could be enough for you to fail a drug test. So, if you’re regularly subjected to drug tests, you should skip the full-spectrum extracts.
Isolate is pure CBD stripped of all other cannabinoids. Many CBD companies use isolate in their products because it is cost-effective. However, CBD isolate can't provide you with the "entourage effect" because no other cannabinoids are present.
- Full-spectrum CBD products = All other cannabinoids (including THC), terpenes, and flavonoids.
- Broad-spectrum CBD products = All other cannabinoids (except THC), terpenes, and flavonoids.
- CBD isolate = Only CBD.
IS CBD LEGAL EVERYWHERE?
In other parts of the world, the laws on CBD are a little different. Some countries have banned it outright; others require the products to have 0% THC. So, even though it has no recreational value, you shouldn’t assume that you’ll be allowed to take it with you when traveling abroad.
WHY CBD MINTS?
Safe, discreet, delicious.
We pioneered cannabinoid infusion in mints because we believed that CBD mints were the best possible delivery method for CBD. Allowing a mint to dissolve on your tongue allows the CBD to absorb sublingually for a more rapid onset.
Additionally, because you are eating the mint and it breaks down in your digestive system, the CBD and its effects will be more consistent for a longer period of time compared to other products, like tinctures or vapes.
